For this recent 性视界传媒 graduate in <a href="https://mechanical.gmu.edu/">mechanical engineering</a>, however, something else was pressing this spring, and that wasn鈥檛 just getting his ducks in a row to graduate or preparing the final steps for his license. His son Kian was born in April, just nine days before he took part in Commencement.</span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Conroe graduated with a minor in <a href="https://volgenau.gmu.edu/program/aviation-flight-training-and-management-minor">Aviation Flight Training and Management</a>. 鈥淲hen I was a kid, I was thinking of firefighter, policeman, doctor. Growing up in Jordan, Al Tell鈥檚 family ran a skydiving company, and he earned a love of flying at an early age. 鈥淚 was young, but the captain would let me go up and control the plane a little bit,鈥 he said.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Al Tell loved that he could combine his core degree with his passion. 鈥淚 was scrolling through minors and saw this one and it was perfect for me. I could do my university studies alongside getting my pilot鈥檚 license.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><a href="https://volgenau.gmu.edu/profiles/lsherry">Lance Sherry</a>, a professor in the Systems Engineering and Operations Research Department, oversees the program. What isn鈥檛 so endearing to residents about their simple life is the need to take a ferry to the Eastern Shore to obtain necessities, such prescription medications. Such a trip is an all-day affair, often causing people to miss work and lose wages. </span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>But now Riverside Health System and DroneUp, a delivery service based in Virginia Beach, are working with a team of 性视界传媒 students to deliver medications via a small drone. But even that poses challenges. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span>鈥淎s a part of my systems engineering senior design project, my team and I performed a context analysis and a stakeholder analysis to find the performance gaps for a case study about drone delivery to an island located in the Chesapeake Bay鈥揟angier Island,鈥 said senior Diana Machuca, who is majoring in systems and industrial engineering. 鈥淭o bridge the gaps, we designed the Drone Range Dynamic System and came up with a business plan for the project.鈥<span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>聽</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淭he route is 15 nautical miles (NM) from Onley, Virginia, to Tangier Island,鈥 said team member Darius Jack. 鈥淭he route traverses both land and terrain resulting in significant wind shifts, including onshore and offshore winds, depending on the time of day.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Depending on a drone鈥檚 design, it can be very sensitive to wind, requiring extensive analysis. Team member Grean Ramos said, 鈥淲e developed an aerodynamic simulation of the drone and its batteries. The simulation showed that the 15 NM route is close to the drone's range limit. Any unexpected headwind could result in the drone running out of battery and needing to land before reaching Tangier Island.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淭here are weather stations at Onley and at Tangier Island airports, but no weather stations in-between," said team member Diana Machuca. The DRDS uses the aerodynamic simulation described above to continuously monitor the range-remaining as the drone flies. If the simulation estimates that the drone has experienced an unexpected wind and will no longer have enough battery power to reach the destination, it recommends the drone operator to return home (if it can) or to land safely in designated landing zones. Simulations showed winds would require the drone to return home 17 percent of the time. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The team鈥檚 plan won First Place in the STEM Track in the <a href="/news/2024-04/winning-teams-are-selected-annual-patriot-pitch-competition">Patriot Pitch Competition</a>, a annual contest sponsored by the Costello College of Business at 性视界传媒, and First Place in the Systems and Analytics Track at the Sage Memorial Design Competition, a student-focused international forum for the design of complex systems. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淲orking on this project was an amazing experience,鈥 said Jack. 鈥淲e had to use all the system engineering knowledge and skills we learned over the past three years. Before coming to Mason, Cummings served as the senior safety advisor to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. She said that experience sparked her interest in a new program in the design and deployment of AI.聽聽</p> <p>鈥淚 believe we have a national security crisis across the Department of Transportation, the Department of Defense, and many other government agencies,鈥 Cummings said. 鈥淲e have a genuine technical illiteracy problem. It's not that people can't understand AI. It's that people are just not being educated in how AI is constructed or in its limitations.鈥澛犅</p> <p>Cummings encountered tech illiteracy problems earlier in her career while serving on the Defense Innovation Board.聽</p> <p>鈥淚 saw the problem then, and now that I've been in the Department of Transportation, it's doubly reinforced my concern about people's limited understanding of AI,鈥 she said.聽</p> <p>Cummings wants industry and government employees to know how to ask the right questions about performance weaknesses and understand where to invest tax dollars.聽聽</p> <p>She said she鈥檚 concerned the U.S. doesn鈥檛 have an effective workforce when it comes to understanding, managing, acquiring, evaluating, and testing AI. She wants people to learn about the right way for humans and AI to work together as well as to learn what is truly attainable and what is merely hype.聽聽</p> <p>鈥淚 think traditional academia has a hard time accepting new areas, like a degree program in the design and deployment of AI. Older schools with more ingrained traditions struggle to embrace newer thinking,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 don't think Mason is like that. Dean Ken Ball and others at the College of Engineering and Computing as well as Mason鈥檚 president Gregory Washington have embraced these ideas.鈥澛犅</p> <p>鈥淢issy鈥檚 knowledge and experience surrounding AI are going to be a phenomenal asset to Mason,鈥 Ball said. 鈥淗er ability to make connections between computer science, electrical, and mechanical engineering fields and leverage the strengths of each to improve our understanding of AI will be a game changer. We are thrilled she has decided to work with us.鈥澛</p> <p>Cummings is proposing a new degree program in AI that will target engineering students as well as those in policy, law, and public health. 鈥淭o navigate the world of AI students also need softer skills in policy, and maybe even ethics,鈥 Cummings said.</p> <figure class="quote">"I find that Mason is far more flexible and more open to new ideas than older more entrenched schools. At Mason, people are willing to come together from the different colleges and schools to solve real complex sociotechnical problems," she said. "There's not one societal problem we have today that belongs to a sole discipline."</figure><p>Her faculty appointment spans three departments鈥<a href="https://cs.gmu.edu/" title="Computer Science">Computer Science</a>, <a href="https://mechanical.gmu.edu/" title="Mechanical Engineering">Mechanical Engineering</a>, and <a href="https://ece.gmu.edu/" title="Electrical and Computer Engineering">Electrical and Computer Engineering</a>. She will also be the First American Bank Endowed Chair and Director of the Center for Robotics, Autonomous Systems, and Translational AI. Photo provided by Hypernova Solar.</figcaption></figure><p><span class="intro-text">Since Michael Riggi was about six years old, his father and brother would take him to a 鈥淐ars and Coffee鈥 show in Great Falls, Virginia, on weekends. Portrait by Michael Riggi.</figcaption></figure><p><span><span>Now, as a junior at 性视界传媒, his career path has also been racing forward.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>The systems engineering major working on an accelerated master鈥檚 degree is the president of Hypernova Solar, a student organization creating what they believe will be the world鈥檚 <a href="/news/2021-11/racing-toward-masons-first-3d-printed-solar-car">first 3D-printed solar car</a>.聽</span></span></p> <p><span><span>Ultimately, Riggi said he aspires to work in the aerospace industry. His work with Hypernova Solar combined with his degree helped him land an internship with the global aerospace, defense, and security company, <a href="https://www.northropgrumman.com/">Northrop Grumman</a>, he said.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>鈥淸Systems engineering] is in high demand in almost all tech industries,鈥 Riggi said.</span></span></p> <figure class="quote"><span><span>鈥淢ason is one of the only schools I found in this area that offered a system engineering major, and Mason鈥檚 program was ranked higher than [the University of Virginia]鈥檚,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 chose Mason off their great program.鈥</span></span></figure><p><span><span>When Riggi interned with Northrop Grumman in summer 2021, he said he worked on spacecraft that go up to the international space station鈥攊n particular, the <a href="https://www.northropgrumman.com/space/cygnus-spacecraft/">Cygnus</a> Mission. Photo provided.</figcaption></figure><p><span><span>鈥淲e made a tool that allowed Mission Control to quickly throw in measurements of the motors to see how it affects the angle of the spacecraft on-the-fly, so they can steer the spacecraft,鈥 Riggi said. </span></span></p> <p><span><span>鈥淭he qualities about Michael that impressed me and my colleagues [at Northrop Grumman] were his imagination and ability to tackle a task that was initially beyond the scope of his previous experience,鈥 said Roseann Alvarez, systems engineering manager at Northrop Grumman. 鈥淗e shows plenty of growth potential and will be an asset to any future employer.鈥</span></span></p> <figure class="quote"><span><span>鈥淏ased on Michael鈥檚 performance and his contributions to the [Commercial Resupply Services] program, I would highly recommend Northrop Grumman recruitment of Mason interns and graduates in the future,鈥 she said.</span></span></figure><p><span><span>Riggi said he鈥檚 excited to intern again with Northrop Grumman in summer 2022. </span></span></p> <p><span><span>鈥淭here鈥檚 something about being on the cutting edge of technology and science that I really love,鈥 he said. <span>鈥淸My internship] helped me realize what traits I value in a workplace and helped me realize specific parts of my education to focus on because I鈥檝e seen what鈥檚 actually needed in the workforce.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span>In addition to opportunities in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, Riggi said he has enjoyed learning from supportive Mason professors including <a href="https://volgenau.gmu.edu/profiles/jshortle">John Shortle</a>, <a href="https://volgenau.gmu.edu/profiles/szaidi2">Abbas Zaidi</a>, and <a href="https://volgenau.gmu.edu/profiles/creagle">Colin Reagle</a>.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>鈥淢ichael embodies the ideal of a systems engineer, being able to assemble and lead a large team of students with diverse skills to design, build, and test a complex system,鈥 Shortle said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 a great ambassador for the discipline and will be a great asset in the workforce.鈥 </span></span></p> <p><span><span>When he鈥檚 not leading Hypernova Solar, Riggi said he enjoys going off-roading and taking photos.</span></span></p> <figure role="group"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/2022-01/ZR2%20winery%20landscape%20copy_0.jpg" width="1000" height="667" alt="On a snowy day, a blue truck partially covered in snow is parked in front of a medieval style door." loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>When he's not leading Hypernova Solar, Mason student Michael Riggi enjoys going off-roading with his truck and taking photos. You can read about the theories and watch videos about them, but nothing comes as close as seeing it live.鈥</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Vanessa Barth, a mechanical engineering senior, adds, 鈥淭hey were teaching us about the mechanical components and systems that control a helicopter. Photo by NASA</figcaption></figure><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>A team of 性视界传媒 students are among the brains behind a satellite that launched into space this weekend as part of a collaboration with Northrop Grumman and Virginia Space that includes being part of a resupply mission to the International Space Station.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p>聽</p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The 14 Mason undergraduate students involved and project advisor </span></span></span><a href="https://volgenau.sitemasonry.gmu.edu/profiles/ppach"><span><span>Peter Pachowicz</span></span></a><span><span><span> watched anxiously on Saturday, Feb. 20, as their ThinSat, a small satellite developed by students that is capable of executing two experiments in space and transmitting data from Extreme Low Earth Orbit (ELEO), took off for space from Wallops Island in Virginia aboard an Antares rocket in the NG-15 Resupply Mission.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p>聽</p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The mission of the Mason ThinSat payload, called ASTERIA, was to test a battery box with different types of thermal shielding and compare the relative effectiveness of two power-handling architectures. It will mean experimenting with using different power generation methods on a ThinSat.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p>聽</p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淭his means the world to me and is the highlight of my academic career!鈥 said computer engineering graduate student Jay Deorukhkar. 鈥淏eing able to participate in Mason鈥檚 very first satellite launch is a privilege beyond my imagination. Space is always challenging for engineers because of the environment and the many systems that you have to integrate into one unit. Helicopters need propellers, but all LTA robots can stay in the air on their own. Instead, they need controls to move them about in the air,鈥 says Mason graduate student and competition teammate Joseph Prince Mathew.聽聽聽聽聽</p> <p>Each team had defenders and seekers to protect their goal and score points against the other team. 鈥淚t got pretty competitive,鈥 says Dinesh Karri, another team member. 鈥淏ut it was so much fun.鈥澛犅犅</p> <p>Every team played each other, and the teams with the most points faced off at the end of the five-day event. 鈥淯nfortunately, we lost, but we had the most points overall throughout the week,鈥 says Mathew.聽聽聽聽聽</p> <p>Mathew and Karri were working with Assistant Professor聽Feitian聽Zhang to develop an underwater glider as part of their PhD studies when they found out about the opportunity to bring their skills to the air. 鈥淚t was a change of medium, from underwater to air. The dynamics are pretty similar,鈥 says Mathew.聽聽聽聽聽</p> <p>Robert Hooks, a junior undergraduate electrical engineering major, jumped on the project because of his interest in robotics and autonomous systems. 鈥淲hen I heard about it from one of my professors, I was very intrigued.
