Carr, chief diversity office in ӽ紫ý’s College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), sees the new Inclusive Teaching and Curriculum Initiative as a natural response to President Gregory Washington’s call for exemplars in combating systemic racism and the marginalization of underserved groups in academia.

The two-workshop program, which was developed by the college’s Office of Diversity, Outreach, and Inclusive Learning (DOIL), is an acknowledgement that the increase in diverse student populations entering higher education has not been met by a corresponding increase in resources for faculty to teach those visible and often invisible entities, Carr said.

The team piloted a short course for CEC and College of Science faculty, offering them tools and techniques for fostering inclusion and making them aware of university resources available to them.

Three faculty enrolled in a longer five-module course on “in-depth inclusive curriculum practices that are designed around identity, power, positionality and privilege and their system effects in higher education,” Carr said.

The initiative is part of efforts to heed the call of President Washington’s Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence Task Force (ARIE), which joined the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of Community Engagement and Civic Learning in funding curriculum design, teaching strategies and pedagogical resources supporting anti-racist and inclusive teaching. Supporting the integration of ARIE throughout the Mason curriculum was one of the three areas recommended for funding by the task force’s Curriculum and Pedagogy Committee.

Short-course topics covered introduction to tools/techniques needed to foster inclusion, and introduction to inclusive assessment tools and course resources. Long-course workshop modules included topics surrounding the current state of inclusive pedagogy in engineering education, student-centered course design, and course activities and appropriate space needed for more inclusive classrooms.

Inclusive classrooms are settings in which the instructors/faculty and students work together to create and sustain an environment where all feel safe, supported and encouraged to express their views and concerns.

“We hope that, in these classrooms, content is deliberately viewed from multiple perspectives and the varied experiences of a range of groups,” said Carr, who noted the critical assistance of Christi Wilcox, his diversity associate, in putting things together.

Faculty members who took part in the summer’s long-course workshop were Mihai Boicu, an associate professor and associate director at the Learning Agents Center Information Sciences and Technology School of Computing within the CEC; Eugene Kim, an assistant professor of bioengineering in the CEC; and Katherine (Raven) Russell, an assistant professor of computer science within the College of Engineering and Computing.

“We want to ensure that faculty are able to present content in a style that reduces all students’ experiences of marginalization and, whenever possible, helps students and faculty understand that their individual experience, values and perspectives influence how they construct and evaluate knowledge in any field or discipline,” Carr said.

Topics

Topics

Campus News

Faculty and Staff News

College of Engineering and Computing

College of Science

Inclusion

diversity

Center of Community Engagement and Civic Learning CECiL

President's Task Force on Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence

Fri, 26 Aug 2022 15:09:04 +0000 John Hollis 85431 at Dominique Dowling is Mason’s 2022 Senior of the Year /news/2022-05/dominique-dowling-masons-2022-senior-year Dominique Dowling is Mason’s 2022 Senior of the Year Colleen Rich Wed, 05/18/2022 - She is also enrolled in one of Mason’s Accelerated Master’s Programs and is pursuing a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education for Diverse Learners.

“I want to implement anti-racist and social justice components into my teaching,” the Richmond, Virginia, native said. “Through administrative roles, I want help other teachers to also implement those principles so that young people don't have to wait until they get the opportunity to take a college course on identity to become aware of inequities.”

It is her passion to advocate for young minds both inside and outside the classroom that led Mason’s Alumni Association to name Dowling the 2022 Senior of the Year.

During her four years at Mason, Dowling has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and has been involved in numerous campus organizations, including serving on two committees for Mason President Gregory Washington’s Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence Task Force. She said she was excited to be involved with the task force because she believes students are often left out of the conversation.

“Many times our voices are not heard due to the lack of representation or the simple fact that one student can't express the concerns of more than 30,000 students,” said Dowling of her work on the task force. “I felt like this was my opportunity to elevate the voices and grievances that many students have.”

In the summer of 2021, Dominique also had the honor of representing Mason on a larger scale as one of the 25 students selected from across the Commonwealth of Virginia to be part of the 2021 Virginia Governor’s Fellows Program.

During what she calls “the best experience I’ve ever had,” Dowling worked with then-Secretary of Education and Mason alum Atif Qarni, who was the first educator appointed to the Virginia governor’s cabinet straight out of a K-12 classroom.

Dowling also has served as a student senator within Mason’s Student Government and as a student representative on former President Ángel Cabrera’s Community Policing Council. She currently serves as president of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Ambassadors, secretary of the Mason chapter of Educators Rising, and the Education Committee lead for the Virginia State Conference Youth and College Division of the NAACP.

Dowling considers her work with the Mason Chapter of the NAACP the high point of her time at the university. She helped revitalize the chapter, bringing it into national compliance, and has held the offices of chapter president and vice president over the years.

“I love being involved,” Dowling said. “I love being able to help create some kind of change. It is amazing to look at the organization now and see how much it has grown.”

She also believes working with the NAACP chapter helped her become a better leader.

“Being part of the NAACP has exposed me to different initiatives and people who have been doing this work for years,” Dowling said. “It made me realize that anti-racism work requires an ongoing dedication because there is always work to be done.”

Topics

Topics

Students

Senior of the Year

Graduation

Commencement

President's Task Force on Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence

School of Integrative Studies

Wed, 18 May 2022 16:00:30 +0000 Colleen Rich 70286 at Trent leads new White House Initiative on HBCUs /news/2022-03/trent-leads-new-white-house-initiative-hbcus Trent leads new White House Initiative on HBCUs Colleen Rich Wed, 03/09/2022 - 13:39

Body

Dietra Trent. She started Feb. 28.

Trent, who also served as chief of staff for Interim President Anne Holton during the 2019-20 academic year and was a key driver of Mason’s Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence (ARIE) Task Force, was previously Virginia Secretary of Education.

“I’m truly honored to have been selected to work in this capacity in the Biden-Harris Administration and for Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona,” said Trent, a graduate of Hampton University, a Virginia HBCU. “I look forward to promoting HBCUs across the country and sharing the history and excellence that come from these colleges and universities. It’s a great opportunity.”

Trent also served as Mason’s interim vice president for Compliance, Diversity and Ethics, and was pivotal in establishing ARIE, one of Washington’s signature initiatives. ARIE, with a university-wide task force of more than 100 members, harnessed and expanded Mason’s existing equity and inclusion efforts to root out systemic discrimination and racism at the largest and most diverse public university in Virginia and establish Mason as a national exemplar in anti-racism and inclusion.

“Dietra was given a number of challenging initiatives to successfully launch and manage, and she did a tremendous job,” Washington said. “In a relatively short time as a Patriot, she made a profound positive impact at Mason with work that is now embedded in the fabric of our university.”

Trent’s new role likely will intersect with Mason on occasion. Under Washington, Mason launched the Hire-Excellence and Diversity Institute (Hire-ED), a partnership with Virginia HBCUs Norfolk State University, Virginia State University, and Virginia Union University. Hire-ED connects graduates to career opportunities in high-demand industries.

Trent served as Virginia secretary of education under Gov. Terry McAuliffe, deputy secretary of education under Gov. Tim Kaine, and director of constituent services under Gov. Mark Warner. Her charge now is to work with the Executive Office of the President and Secretary Cardona to eliminate barriers faced by HBCUs. She will lead priorities focusing on government policies, projects, and programs that serve HBCUs.

“The one thing HBCUs do better than any other university in the world is teach leadership,” Trent said. “Not only do they have incredible leadership programs, but they embed leadership, excellence, and service in every course. I often say that I earned my master’s and PhD from VCU. But I got my education from Hampton University.”

Topics

Topics

Faculty and Staff News

President's Task Force on Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence

Wed, 09 Mar 2022 18:39:33 +0000 Colleen Rich 66716 at
