About this Course

What is the role of business in creating positive social change? Do businesses have a
responsibility to serve shareholders and other stakeholders such as employees, the
planet, and the community at large? Is there a purpose for business beyond profit and if
so, what is it? Come explore the answers to questions such as these in this course, which
brings together concepts from multiple disciplines to address the complex relationships
and mutual dependencies of six key stakeholders: shareholders, employees, customers,
community/society, suppliers, and the planet.

Stakeholders of a business include its shareholders, employees, customers, community/society, suppliers, and the planet/environment. Each can have a direct impact on the success of a business, and each can be impacted positively or negatively depending on how a business act. Businesses that define their purpose to be stakeholders value creation may make different choices in pursuit of different goals than do businesses who define their purpose solely as shareholder value creation.

This multidisciplinary course, open to students across the University, will support student development of an advanced and critical understanding of the key stakeholders in a business.

Your academic advisors in the School of Business Office of Student Success and Academic Services are excited to have you back for the new academic year and are looking forward to working with you! Our academic advising team is your primary point of contact to guide you on items including course scheduling, registration, change of major/concentration, minor advising, making referrals, and more.

We offer drop-ins and appointments virtually and in person for your convenience. For office hours, accessing virtual services, and scheduling an appointment, please visit our website here. You can also reach us by emailing your assigned academic advisor or masonbus@gmu.edu or by calling 703-993-1880.

During regular advising the following will apply. See below for peak advising dates and mode:

Mondays and Tuesdays
- 9:30-11:30 am and 1:00-4:00 pm virtual and in-office drop ins
- 9:30-3:00 pm and 4:00-7:30 pm virtual appointments
Wednesdays
- No advising
Thursdays and Fridays
- 9:30-11:30 am and 1:00-4:00 pm virtual and in-office appointments

Peak advising hours and mode will be from Monday, October 31 through Friday, November 11. When the School of Business academic advising team is in peak advising, it will require adjustments to our advising in order to accommodate as many students as possible:

Fall 2022 registration does not start until April 21st for Seniors, but it is recommended you visit an academic advisor now to make sure you are on the right track. Registration dates for each class can be found on the Registrar's Academic Calendar here and your specific time ticket will be available to view when the Registrar sends an email letting you know when time tickets are viewable.

Attention Financial Planning and Wealth Management Concentrations:

This concentration requires specific courses only offered once per academic year. Please review the following course offering schedules and plan accordingly.

ACCT 408 *only offered in fall semesters
- Requires a B- or higher in both FNAN 303 and ACCT 303
ACCT 441 *only offered in fall semesters
- Requires a C or higher in ACCT 351
ACCT 493 or FNAN 493 Capstone *only offered in spring semesters
- Requires a C or higher in ACCT/FNAN 390, FNAN 311, and ACCT 351

Please keep the above course offerings in mind as you register for classes and complete required prerequisite courses. We encourage students to work with an academic advisor to plan a schedule for graduation that incorporates the above schedule of courses. School of Business Minimum Computing Requirements for the 2021-2022 Academic Year

School of Business Minimum Computing Requirements for the 2021-2022 Academic Year Marianne Klinker Fri, 02/18/2022 - 15:16

All School of Business Undergraduate Students must have access to a portable computing device that meets the following minimum standards. Students are required to bring their laptops to class if asked by the instructor. Phones of any sort are not acceptable in place of a laptop, and also a keyboard is required.

Operating System: Windows Operating System 10 or newer is required. Mac users are required to install a virtual machine (VM) or Windows partition on the hard drive to run the Windows operating system.
- We discourage the use of Macs with the M1 CPU (released late 2020) as it does not support VMs or partitions. Students are required to have access to a Windows computer or older Mac that supports the systems required by the School of Business.
- For users with older Macs, it is the responsibility of Mac users to install and create this Windows VM or partition as business courses require the usage of software that runs on Windows (partition may slow laptop performance). Examples of partitions that can be used are VMware Fusion or Bootcamp
Memory: 8 GB (recommend 10GB or higher)
Video/audio streaming capability: Students must have a video camera and microphone that feed or stream audio and video in real time to or through the internet. Instructors may ask students to activate the camera and microphone for class activities.
Hard drive free space: at least 120 GB free space (recommend 250 GB free space or higher)
Network Capability: wireless capability required (recommend wired network capability also)
Software:
- All Mason students can download the Windows operating system and VMware Fusion for free from the Microsoft Azure Portal and Vmware – OnTheHub (available once semester begins and registered in a Business School class)
- Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise (available for free for students here)
- Antivirus Software (available for free for students here)
- Internet browser (Chrome or Firefox recommended)
- Other software for individual courses may need to be installed

The cost of a computer can be included in the student’s estimated cost of attendance. In order to do this, students must provide a copy of their receipt or purchase order for their computer and submit that to their assigned Financial Aid Counselor.

This can be done once during the student’s academic program.
