Steve Maex, an assistant professor of accounting at ��ӽ紫ý School of Business, recently received the American Accounting Association (AAA)’s Outstanding International Accounting Dissertation Award.

The International Accounting Section of the AAA seeks to be “the sought-after partner for thought leadership on international accounting related issues” and “serve as a point of entry into AAA for international faculty and doctoral students,” according to the group’s website.

The Outstanding International Accounting Dissertation Award for 2023 was open to doctoral dissertations on topics related to international accounting that were successfully defended during the 2022 calendar year.

The winning dissertation, “Modern Privacy Regulation, Internal Information Quality, and Operational Efficiency: Evidence from the General Data Protection Regulation,” examines the business impact of the European Union’s sweeping 2016 laws on data privacy.

Maex’s choice of topic was influenced by his professional experience as an IT auditor and data analytics specialist at KPMG LLP, prior to pursuing a PhD in accounting from Temple University.

As he tells it, “I was thinking back to experiences consulting with clients faced with prospects of needing to comply not only with this EU-focused regulation, but by similar privacy regulations under consideration by some U.S. states–California in particular.”

Unsurprisingly, corporate leaders mainly viewed the prospect of impending legislation in terms of its challenges and costs. For example, in its 2018 10-K filing with the SEC, Alphabet cited the “substantial costs” of GDPR compliance and opined that “it is possible that despite our efforts, governmental authorities or third parties will assert that our business practices fail to comply.”

To Maex, however, here was an impetus for firms to finally get the data side of their business under control. “At the time, we were advising clients to use this opportunity to implement a governance program over their information that would allow for compliance with privacy regulations while also allowing for other strategic benefits,” he says. This course of action would allow firms to “fully grasp what data and information they held and take the steps necessary to manage their information risks.”

Maex hypothesized that as companies improved the quality of their internal information as a result of GDPR compliance, they would increase their operational efficiency. In other words, they would be able to make smarter resource allocation decisions.

And that is indeed what Maex found after identifying U.S.-based firms with exposure to GDPR and tracking their internal information quality and operational efficiency using widely accepted proxies from prior literature. “The quality of affected firms’ information appears to have improved bringing with it operational benefits,” Maex summarizes.

GDPR still appears to have had a negative net effect on operational efficiency, likely due to the catch-up costs involved in compliance with such sweeping regulations. But in the long run, Maex anticipates that these costs may be offset by the benefits borne by improved information quality.

Maex suggests that since stricter privacy regulations–for most of the world’s population, anyway–appear to be a fait accompli, the only choice companies have is whether to take a purely box-ticking approach to compliance or to make broader investments that would withstand the evolving regulator landscape.

Regarding the dissertation award, which was presented at the AAA annual meeting in August, Maex has words of fulsome thanks for his PhD advisors, Jagan Krishnan and Jayanthi Krishnan, at Temple University. “The dissertation process can be a lonely endeavor without the support of those that assist and motivate along the way. I was lucky to have two advisors, and a broader dissertation committee, from which I benefited immensely, and without which, I would not have been able to bring the dissertation to fruition,” he says.

“It’s an incredible honor to receive such an award,” Maex further states. “When you consider the other papers and authors that have received this award in the past, it’s humbling to be in their company.”

Leila Austin, assistant professor of Business Foundations, was named one of the 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellows. Austin, who has been with the School of Business for the last five years, truly values her role as an educator.

“Teaching is a calling. I feel privileged to be a teacher because I know I play a key role in helping to nurture the future leaders of our community. I teach students to challenge their own thinking, to question the events happening around them, and to contemplate solutions to problems that they face,” said Austin.

“Leila’s strongest contribution to our area is her teaching. She is dedicated to enhancing our students’ critical thinking and to providing a structured opportunity for them to question and explore intercultural competencies. In fact, she recently developed a special topics course on business, government, and public policy that considers how businesses and entrepreneurs have shaped political and economic outcomes in both the United States and globally,” said Jackie Brown, area chair of Business Foundations.

Additionally, Austin has served on the school’s Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Taskforce, where she strove to create a space where people can bring ideas to the table, feel valued and reassured that their voice and lived experiences matter. “If some of our community members don’t feel included, we haven’t leveraged the power of diversity. I feel privileged to have participated in a taskforce that aims to bring the kind of psychological safety that we need in our educational institutions and society at large,” said Austin.

In her Business and Society course, issues surrounding diversity in the workplace often occur during class discussions. In one particular class, Austin remembers a student struggling with this topic and left the classroom when a female student challenged his thoughts on the issue of gender inequities. “After class, I found this student waiting for me and wanting to further discuss and understand his own reaction. I invited him and the female student to my office for a private meeting and during that meeting, both students found that they had more in common than they had imagined. We had an honest and at times difficult discussion about a variety of issues that transcended the class itself,” said Austin.

Through this discourse with her students, Austin learned how important it is for professors to provide a safe space for students to have these type of conversations. “It isn’t always as smooth as I’d like it to be, but it’s an ongoing process that I believe is very worthwhile. As an immigrant myself, I feel right at home and very privileged to be guiding the multiple perspectives that my students bring to class,” said Austin.

Gretchen Hendricks, instructor of Business Foundations, was named one of the 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellows. While Hendricks joined the Foundations area in 2016, this wasn’t her first position with the School of Business.

“I served as the director of Career Services and Placement in the early 2000’s, a role that provided the perfect training ground for the professional skills courses I currently teach. The formation of the Foundations area, and the opportunity to teach the BUS 103 and BUS 303 courses is specifically why I returned to Mason. It has been a full circle experience,” Hendricks said.

Frequent collaboration with her colleagues has influenced her teaching style and standards, allowing her to become a better professor as a result. “My fellow professors are mentors and friends, and I count on them to challenge me in ways that encourage me to continue to grow and be my best in my own teaching journey,” Hendricks said.

“Gretchen is a teaching exemplar in both the online and face-to-face classrooms, a combination which is uncommon to find in the same person. She was recently nominated for two 2021 ��ӽ紫ý Teaching Excellence Awards, one for face-to-face and one for online. Her passion for students and for teaching also allow for engaged conversations amongst colleagues, which promote the same critical thinking skills we ask of our students,” said Jackie Brown, area chair of Business Foundations.

Last year, Hendricks partnered with WGMU Radio to create a new assignment for her BUS 303: Developing Your Professional Skills course. Students were assigned to create podcasts on professional skills topics that were covered in the class, such as emotional intelligence and leadership. Creating the podcasts encouraged students to improve their research, rhetorical awareness, organization and time management, and communications abilities. Several of the podcasts were shared through the WGMU Radio SoundCloud page so the Mason community could enjoy listening to them.

It’s clear that Hendricks has a passion for teaching and coming up with innovative ways to keep students engaged in the classroom, “Working with students to assess and teach them how to leverage their strengths and skills, build a network, and actively connect to opportunities that will fulfill their goals and own potential is an amazing and rewarding experience,” Hendricks said.

Jeremy E. Plotnick, director of the minor programs at the School of Business, was named one of this year’s Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellows. Plotnick, who is also an assistant professor of Business Foundations, joined the School of Business in January 2016 as an adjunct. Plotnick began teaching college students on a part-time basis, while he was still serving as an executive director of a public relations firm in Thailand.

“I would teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in communications management and crisis communications at Chulalongkorn University. Over time I found that I enjoyed teaching more than most aspects of my ‘day job.’ When I moved back to the United States, I decided to focus on teaching full-time, as I find it personally and professionally very rewarding,” Plotnick said.

“Jeremy is dedicated to making the student experience in our courses both valuable and interactive, often using technology to do so and suggesting additional materials to continue updating the curriculum. Last year he developed a group assignment for BUS 200 asking students to link elements of the circular economy model to an assigned company for a PESTLE* analysis project. The assignment resulted in student recommendations on how the circular economy model could be integrated into the existing operation to enhance both environmental and organizational sustainability,” said Jackie Brown, area chair of Business Foundations.

Last year, Plotnick and Assistant Professor of Business Foundations Leila Austin participated in the 2020 Pedagogy Innovation Showcase, where they redesigned the final project of the BUS 200 Global Environment of Business course. Originally, students were asked to write a report and prepare a group presentation, but instead Plotnick and Austin proposed that students should do a multi-media presentation of their research. “This would involve collating their material and determining how to render their findings in a visually impactful manner, then storyboarding the project in advance of actually preparing the presentation using narrated videos and/or animations. This proved to be a great experience for me, as I would not have thought about this type of execution on my own,” Plotnick said.

Plotnick, who was also awarded Outstanding Professor in Business Foundations in 2020, holds a Bachelor’s of Arts in Political Science and a MBA from Rutgers University, and a doctorate in International Relations from Northern Illinois University. His research interests include fake news/misinformation and corporate reputation, trust and corporate communications, and evolving trends in stakeholder communications.

When it comes to the School of Business Plotnick really values the collaborative ethos among his colleagues. “Working with my colleagues in the Foundations area has been a wonderful experience. I’ve found everyone to be open to helping each other and sharing best practices. I feel very comfortable discussing challenges that I may be having with a class, and know that my peers will provide me with useful advice on how to address them,” Plotnick said.

* A PESTLE analysis is a framework to analyze the key factors influencing an organization from the outside including factors such as political, economic, sociological, technological, legal and environmental.

Christine Landoll

Christine Landoll, director of Business Engagement and instructor of Business Foundations, was named one of the 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellows. Landoll graduated from the School of Business in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, and again in 1992 with a Master of Science in Taxation.

After having worked as a certified public accountant at Deloitte in various roles including as a tax consultant and as a managing director, Landoll began at the School of Business as an adjunct in 2017 and says teaching has always been a passion. “I facilitated training sessions when I worked for Deloitte and was the director of Tax Learning and Performance Enhancement, being able to positively impact people's lives and futures—well there is nothing greater,” Landoll said.

“Christine’s largest contribution to the area and school is her ability to see and develop connections; whether those be with students, faculty, staff, or the community, her enthusiasm for Mason and the impact we have on our students and local business is contagious. She strongly believes in the good Mason does and that we do as educators. She sees our role as educators as her responsibility to reach every student and to help each one better their professional skillset,” said Jackie Brown, area chair of Business Foundations.

Landoll, president-elect of the ��ӽ紫ý Alumni Association and the new Alumni Association representative to the Board of Trustees, has received multiple recognitions from the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning’s “Thank-a-Teacher” program. Landoll goes out of her way to help and guide her students, even serving as a faculty advisor for the Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. “This is the oldest business fraternity in the country and accepts students from any area on campus which I love—working across disciplines is key in the business world—it widens your perspective and helps you solve problems more holistically,” Landoll said.

When she was at Deloitte, Landoll served on the School of Business’ Accounting Advisory Council and enjoyed giving back to her alma mater. Landoll was impressed with how Mason encouraged the input of businesses to strengthen curriculum and enhance engagement with students. So when it came time to establish the School of Business’ Management Advisory Council in 2019, it was a no-brainer. “Human resources is a passion area of mine so when I saw an opportunity to establish the Management Advisory Council (which includes HR, consulting, and entrepreneurship) I jumped at it. There is so much potential in each of these areas—I wanted to be a part of that,” Landoll said.

Her favorite thing about the School of Business? The students naturally. “Our students actually make me a better professional, I have to practice what I preach—so I network, I post to social media, I think about what ‘brand’ I am creating, I never stop learning, I get comfortable with pushing myself to be uncomfortable—that is where you grow, and the list goes on—I love that! Plus watching the students do the same and really transform themselves into business leaders is so rewarding and fun to watch,” Landoll said.

For Brad Greenwood, it’s all about the students. His demonstrated contributions to teaching (in addition to research and leadership/engagement) puts him among the “best of the best” says Dean Maury Peiperl, honoring Greenwood with a 2021 School of Business Dean’s Scholar Award. One of four faculty to receive the award, Greenwood is an associate professor of information systems and operations management at ��ӽ紫ý School of Business.

Other faculty recipients include, Jessica Hoppner, associate professor of marketing, Shun Ye, associate professor of information systems and operations management, and Heather Vough, associate professor of management.

"Aside from extraordinary research productivity, Greenwood's ability to have an impact on a much broader audience beyond the confines of academia is what separates him from most others at the school and business scholars in general,” says Pallab Sanyal, area chair of information systems and operations management. “I’m thrilled that his contributions are being recognized through this award."

Greenwood’s research examines the intended and unintended consequence of innovation. Specifically, he is interested in how access to the resulting information affects welfare at the interface between business, technology, and social issues; notably in the contexts of health care and entrepreneurship. His research findings are quoted extensively in a wide range of publications and media outlets.

Since joining Mason in 2019, his teaching has been devoted to executive education, advanced analytics, and the undergraduate core. Greenwood’s love for teaching and students is evident in all he does. When asked about his favorite aspect of the School of Business, his immediate response was, “How can it not be the STUDENTS!” Not only does Greenwood enjoy teaching and working with students, but collaborations are also important to him. “Although all of my papers are special in their own ways, papers written with doctoral students and junior co-authors are the best,” says Greenwood. “It’s great to see someone get their first hit.”

Greenwood has published more than 22 peer-reviewed articles, 14 of them recognized in premier journals. He is the associate editor at Management Science and MIS Quarterly. He has received numerous research papers awards, and was recently selected as a finalist for the prestigious National Institute for Health Care Management Health Care Research Award. During his tenure at Mason, he has contributed to curriculum development efforts in the area of business analytics, introduced instruction on the use of advanced analytic tools in his course work, and has been active in recruiting new information systems and operations management faculty to the School of Business.

Greenwood also founded the Washington Area IT Symposium (WAITS) to promote collaboration among academic researchers in the region and currently still runs it. He received his PhD in decision, operations and information technology from the University of Maryland and is currently a student at Mason’s Antonin Scalia Law School.

Brian K. Ngac, instructor of Information Systems and Operations Management, was named one of 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellows. Ngac, a soon to be Triple Patriot, graduated from ��ӽ紫ý in 2016 with a bachelor’s of science and again in 2017 with his master’s of science both in Applied Information Technology. Ngac is currently pursuing his doctorate in Information Technology at Mason’s College of Engineering & Computing.

Ngac has been teaching since 2008, albeit as a junior Taekwondo instructor while still in middle school. It was then he realized that he enjoyed connecting with students of all ages. In 2013, he interned with the Parsons Corporation, and worked with one of their clients, the United States Air Force, where he provided training for a technology platform he helped develop. “I would say my ability to breakdown complicated subjects into simple components and deliver them effectively to my students is what drew me to teaching and keeps me teaching. And of course, seeing the success and accomplishments of my students during and after they're with me,” Ngac said.

“Since joining in 2019, Brian has been an invaluable member of the ISOM family. Using his expertise in cybersecurity, he has introduced new courses, including an experiential project course with business clients. His teaching evaluations have been outstanding. Brian has also enthusiastically participated in other area activities. I’m really happy that his contributions are being recognized by the school through this award,” said Pallab Sanyal, ISOM area chair.

Ngac has created two courses for the School of Business. The first is a custom section of MIS 462 Honors Seminar in Management Information Systems to help students gain a better understanding of cyber security. “This honor’s seminar gives students an insight into how information security threats, principles, and practices can be, and should be, applied to different areas of the business environment—as well as their own personal lives,” Ngac said.

The second is an experiential course titled Technology Analysis & Proposals with Clients, and is currently being offered as MIS 491 Seminar in Management Information Systems. In this course, students are placed into groups and are assigned to work with a real-world client solving an issue the company is having. Students are asked to propose and present to their clients quantitative analyses and visual models of their client’s current and desired states, solution analysis of alternatives, risk/risk response strategies, interface and architectural design options, as well as implementation strategies. “Students get to experience how projects are run in an agile environment where client requirements are constantly changing. They learn how to interact with, update, present to, and receive feedback from a real client—all of this before they graduate,” Ngac said.

Victoria M. Grady, director of the MS in Management program, was named one of 2021 Dean’s Teaching Faculty Fellows. Grady, who is also an associate professor of Management, joined the ��ӽ紫ý School of Business in 2014 as an assistant professor.

“Dr. Grady is an exceptional educator with a passion for her students and the topics she teaches. Through her research and consulting she brings insights from leaders in industry into the classroom,” said Associate Dean of Graduate Programs Paige Wolf.

After receiving her MS in Management from the University of Alabama in Huntsville she was drawn to teaching. Not long after, she had the opportunity to move to Europe, living in a small town in Southern Germany, where she began teaching for the University of Maryland’s European Division. “Once I began working for Maryland, my interest in teaching just continued to grow. When I returned back to the United States a few years later, I pursued my doctorate at The George Washington University with the goal of a career in higher education,” Grady said.

“My favorite part of the Mason community is being a part of a future-focused organization that has an eye toward growth and innovation. In just the last seven years of my tenure at Mason, I have been able to be a part of great change, which is incredibly exciting. I can’t wait to see what the future looks like for the school, and I am honored to be a part of it,” Grady added.

In the last several years, Grady has written articles for the Harvard Business Review, Washington Business Journal, a book in 2019 on workplace attachment, published four peer-reviewed articles, served as a faculty senator, and received the Outstanding Teaching in Management Award in 2016. However, helping her students is her greatest accomplishment.

In her role as director of the MS in Management program, Grady meets with each student applicant to discuss the curriculum and diverse career opportunities available to an MS in Management graduate. Many of these students have recently completed their undergraduate studies and do not have a business background – making them ideal candidates for this program. Designed to provide a foundation in business , MS in Management coursework includes topic areas such information technology, finance, economics, organizational behavior, among others.

Several years ago, Grady met with a recent undergraduate student who majored in German and Spanish, and was concerned about the quantitative component of the program. “I assured her we had great faculty and fantastic support for our grad students concerned about the quantitative aspects of our program. As it turned out, she loved statistics, and did extremely well,” Grady said. The student enjoyed the quantitative aspects of the program so much that she accepted an internship focused in the finance area, and ultimately earned a permanent position within the organization. “Similar stories emerge every year in our program, and I love that! This particular student is continuing her work with this global organization headquartered in Reykjavik, Iceland and has already been promoted with endless future opportunity,” Grady said.

Heather Vough, associate professor of management, is one of four faculty at ��ӽ紫ý School of Business to be named a recipient of the 2021 School of Business Dean’s Scholar Award.

To be selected for the award, applicants demonstrated sustained contributions to research, teaching, and leadership/engagement. Other faculty recipients include Brad Greenwood, associate professor of information systems and operations management, Jessica Hoppner, associate professor of marketing and Shun Ye, associate professor of information systems and operations management.

“These faculty members represent the best of the best—faculty who are terrific researchers, great teachers, and are engaged with our academic communities locally, nationally, and internationally,” says Dean Maury Peiperl.

Vough, currently in her third year at the School of Business, says the dominant themes in her research are identity and sensemaking at work, specifically researching how individuals understand who they are in the context of their professions, organizations, and careers, as well as how they make sense of and respond to workplace transitions. She says she seeks answers to questions such as “Who are we relative to our organizations and professions and why does that matter at work?” And “How do we make sense of and respond to what happens to us at work?”

“I think the issue of role-based image discrepancies is really interesting,” says Vough. “Role-based image discrepancies occur when a role member sees their role differently than individuals outside the role.” In her research, Vough and her colleagues spoke with architects, lawyers, advanced practice nurses, and accountants. “They each said that their clients did not understand the work that they did and that lack of understanding hindered their ability to serve their clients.” She is currently researching how such discrepancies impact entrepreneurs and their willingness to use the entrepreneur label.

Vough has published 16 peer reviewed articles, eight of which have appeared in premier management journals. She is an associate editor at Academy of Management Journal. Vough has served as a member of five research journal editorial boards: Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Human Relations, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Management Communications Quarterly. She serves as the chair of the Curriculum Subcommittee for the School of Business Diversity, Inclusion, and Belongingness Task Force. Vough received her PhD in organizational behavior from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Business.

In addition to her research and teaching, Vough is also the PhD coordinator for the management area. “Selecting and developing PhD students is something that is really important to me and something that I greatly enjoy,” says Vough. Despite the limitations of in-person relationships with students due to COVID-19 during her time at Mason, Vough says she has still established strong connections with students. “I have had the good fortune to teach many really bright students, some of whom I have counseled to continue on to grad school.”

Vough says her colleagues at Mason have had a great impact on her. “We are a really tight knit group. We meet up weekly (in-person or virtually) to catch up and share research updates,” says Vough. “We are a unique and quirky set of people, which makes it a lot of fun to come to work.”
