The program, titled Healing and Educating Afghans for Resiliency-Virginia (HEAR-VA), will serve Afghan refugees residing in Northern and Central Virginia, where an estimated 95% of Afghans resettled in 2022.聽聽</p> <p>HEAR-VA seeks to screen 500 individuals for eligibility and enroll 305 participants in care services.聽聽</p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2024-09/map_clinic_refugee_resettlement.jpeg?itok=fpHZo8W_" width="350" height="285" alt="Sutter SAIC grant refugee health service delivery" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Photo provided</figcaption></figure><p>鈥淲e are implementing a care coordination model where individuals, regardless of which HEAR-VA partner they interact with first, will receive screenings, and be connected with services that address their individualized care needs,鈥 Sutter said. "What鈥檚 especially important is this program will be built not just for, but in partnership with actual Afghan survivors of combat and other refugees who are impacted by trauma and violence."</p> <p>The SASIC grant was awarded from the Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families, Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). The mission of ORR is to provide newly arrived refugees from Afghanistan with resources to begin healing combat-related trauma and facilitate sustainable physical, emotional, social, and economic well-being.聽</p> <p>This interdisciplinary HEAR-VA initiative will be managed by the Mason and Partners Clinic in partnership with Virginia Department of Social Services Office of New Americans (DSS-ONA), the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services Office of Behavioral Health Wellness (DBHDS-OBHW), Health Brigade, Northern Virginia Family Services, and additional community partners. The program went into effect July 2024 and will extend through February 2026.聽</p> <p>鈥淭his collection of partners is dedicated to creating an innovative program that will be community-based, community-driven, and community-led. We are building local capacity to serve vulnerable populations, not just for the duration of the grant, but long after we as the implementers have departed,鈥 Sutter said.聽聽</p> <p>In addition to her role as a professor in the School of Nursing, Sutter is the director of the Mason and Partners (MAP) Clinics. Photo by Evan Cantwell/Creative Services/性视界传媒</figcaption></figure><p><span><span>To support Afghan refugees needing to relaunch their careers in the United States, 性视界传媒 is inviting scholars and researchers who have recently left Afghanistan to <a href="/campaigns/afghan-scholars">apply for an academic appointment as visiting scholars</a>. </span></span></p> <p><span><span>鈥<span>At Mason, we care about what happens in our societies whether here in Virginia, regionally, nationally or globally,鈥 said </span><a href="https://carterschool.gmu.edu/profiles/aozerdem">Alpaslan 脰zerdem</a><span>, dean of Mason鈥檚 </span><a href="https://carterschool.gmu.edu/">Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution</a><span>. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淎s the Carter School, we wanted to respond to the crisis in a way that we鈥檇 address a critical cluster of challenges effectively, through our own resources and capacities as an academic institution,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t was almost a natural reaction for us to think about ways of helping.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淭he Office of the Provost is committed to help our deans and respective academic units welcome Afghan professors and researchers to our institution and have a potential impact on their safety and scholarly work鈥, said Laurence Bray, associate provost for graduate education.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span>The program is open to Afghans who have legal residence in the United States or are in the process of obtaining a U.S. Visa. Selected scholars selected will receive financial and institutional support from Mason for a year, with a possible option for renewal. </span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淎s visiting scholars, they鈥檇 be able to integrate themselves in both ongoing and prospective research initiatives, leading to opportunities for the renewal of their Mason affiliation,鈥 </span></span><span>脰zerdem said.<span> 鈥淢ore importantly, with their wealth of experience in post-conflict reconstruction and peacebuilding, as well as their specific areas of disciplinary expertise, Afghan scholars and researchers have so much to contribute to U.S. higher education [and to Mason].鈥 </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>The scholars will be evaluated on criteria including their credentials, ability to travel to the United States, professional experience, and a field of study that aligns with a participating Mason school or college.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>The program speaks to Mason鈥檚 </span></span><a href="https://catalog.gmu.edu/about-mason/university/"><span>mission</span></a><span><span>.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淲e value not only diversity and access, but also fraternity and solidarity in responding to socio-economic and political challenges,鈥 脰zerdem said. 鈥淚t was great that this idea by the Carter School was integrated into the university鈥檚 plans for responding to higher education needs of Afghan refugees, and it is wonderful that the program is already up and running.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The Afghan Scholars program also provides an opportunity for giving back, 脰zerdem said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淭here are many people in our communities who would like to help Afghan refugees, and by supporting this program, they鈥檇 have a direct contribution in helping those scholars rebuild their lives,鈥 he said. 鈥淗istorically, there have been many examples in which scholars who fled to the U.S. have generously contributed to the development of sciences and technology in this country, and now we have an opportunity to make it happen again.鈥</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span>For more information and to apply to the Afghan Scholars Program, <a href="/campaigns/afghan-scholars">click here</a>. </span></span></p> <p>The Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution, in partnership with 性视界传媒, is committed to supporting at least one Afghan scholar. Photo provided.</figcaption></figure><p><span class="intro-text">Isidore Nsengiyumva, only four years old at the time, was in the fields with his father and older brother in Burundi, when suddenly they heard the sound of motors and guns. Troops involved in the country鈥檚 civil war attacked their village, and rapidly, their lives were changed. </span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淲e hid in a bush, and when the noise of the guns and fighting subsided, we went back and found our home burned,鈥 Nsengiyumva said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 when my dad decided it was no longer safe.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The family fled to a commune for shelter, Nsengiyumva said. A few months later, his father found someone to take them to Tanzania, where they lived in refugee camps from 1996 to 2004. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淕oing through civil war and many other atrocities, we鈥檝e seen the hand of military institutions [when they dismiss their duties] to protect the integrity, territory and people of Burundi,鈥 Nsengiyumva said, adding that some extended family did not survive the refugee journey.</span></span></span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/2021-11/Dad%202013.jpeg" width="300" height="290" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Nsengiyumva's father. "My dad has a primary school education and later trained as a mason," Nsengiyumva said. "He used his skills extensively in the refugee camps in Tanzania to build houses for local populations. He taught me the power of hope, love of family and resilience in the face of adversity."聽</figcaption></figure><p><span><span><span><span>鈥淚 want to contribute to a more peaceful Burundi where uniformed personnel discharge their roles for the good of everyone,鈥 he said.</span></span><span> 鈥淚鈥檓 hoping with my education at [性视界传媒] and the skills I learn in the mass atrocity and genocide prevention [graduate program], I can contribute to enlightening my colleagues, and in that way, contribute to keeping peace.鈥 </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Nsengiyumva, an officer in the Burundi National Defense Force, is a </span><a href="https://carterschool.gmu.edu/prospective-students/masters-degrees/charles-e-scheidt-masters-fellowship-genocide-and-mass"><span>Charles E. Scheidt Fellow</span></a><span> at the </span><a href="https://carterschool.gmu.edu/"><span>Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution</span></a><span>. He said he鈥檚 taking his courses online from Kenya, and is grateful for the opportunity.</span></span></span></p> <figure class="quote"><span><span><span>鈥淚鈥檓 learning with people from diverse backgrounds all over the world, and get to share my experiences,鈥 he said, mentioning the school鈥檚 global prestige. 鈥淚鈥檓 not sure I could have that opportunity any other way鈥擬ason gives me that.鈥</span></span></span></figure><p><span><span><span>Nsengiyumva said joining the military was his childhood dream, as boys in the refugee camps were taught a love of country. It was also his ticket to education, the first-generation college student said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Some of Nsengiyumva鈥檚 educational opportunities included studying at the University of Burundi, earning a scholarship to study engineering in Ethiopia, and a scholarship from the African Union to pursue a graduate degree in electrical engineering at the Pan-African University (PAU). </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>He said he learned about Mason at PAU, and the Carter School is likewise opening doors for him.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>In particular, Nsengiyumva said he鈥檚 learning mediation and facilitation skills, which have practical applications for his professional and personal life.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淚sidore approaches each subject with curiosity, is supportive of his co-learners, and is able to apply theory to practice,鈥 said Mason adjunct professor Jeanne Zimmer.聽鈥淗is background and experience coupled with his learnings through Mason will enable him to effect social-justice change on the micro and macro levels.鈥</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Outside of class, Nsengiyumva said being a first-generation student and his experiences have taught him a lot, including a lesson on hope and never giving up, which his father helped instill in him. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淣sengiyumva means 鈥楪od hears,鈥欌 he said. 鈥淣ot only going to Mason, but having made it as far as I have, I feel I鈥檝e had the grace of God throughout鈥攊t鈥檚 given me confidence that whatever my mind conceives, I can probably achieve.鈥</span></span></span></p> <figure role="group"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/2021-11/mom%202019%20during%20my%20sister%27s%20engagement%20ceremony%20and%20Aunt%20Anesie%28my%20dad%27s%20young%20Sis%29.jpeg" width="1024" height="682" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>From left to right:聽Nsengiyumva's Aunt Anesie and his mother in 2019.
