Service to others has long been a part of Muhammad Farhan Babar鈥檚 life

It鈥檚聽less聽a hobby as聽much as聽it is just something that is an integral聽part of who聽Muhammad Farhan Babar聽is deep down.聽

Volunteering his time to help others聽has helped shape聽the 性视界传媒 freshman聽and聽聽member聽into the聽selfless聽young man he鈥檚 become.聽

And Farhan, as he鈥檚 known to those closest to him, says he鈥檇 have it no other way.聽

鈥淰olunteering has always been a big thing for me,鈥 said聽the 18-year-old聽聽(EIP)聽graduate聽and聽aspiring computer science major from Thomas Jefferson High School in聽Alexandria, Virginia.聽鈥淚t鈥檚 just something I do聽and it鈥檚聽really聽shaped聽my personality.聽It鈥檚聽changed me a lot. It鈥檚聽shaped聽how I think,聽who聽I am and how I view life.鈥澛

Those who know Babar are hardly surprised.聽, the director of EIP, recalled Babar as a great student who had immediately made a聽positive聽impression on him.

鈥淗e was always pleasant, respectful and super inquisitive,鈥 Davis said.聽鈥淚鈥檝e learned you can tell the quality of a student by the types of questions they ask. Farhan didn鈥檛 waste words, was always direct and asked questions of substance. I am happy he chose Mason, and I only see him excelling in his studies.鈥澛

Babar, who聽grew up聽in nearby Prince William County,聽is one of four聽boys聽and had originally dreamed of being a doctor. He聽credited聽one of his聽brothers聽for getting him started聽volunteering at a local medical center聽during his junior year of high school. His duties there聽often聽included signing聽patients in at the front desk, visiting聽patients in their rooms to see if they needed anything,聽and fixing beds,聽among other chores.

Babar聽has a history聽giving of himself to help others.聽He was just a freshman in high school when he first began tutoring middle school students in math, including his younger brother.聽

鈥淚t鈥檚 incredibly satisfying when you聽see聽them start to get it,鈥 he said.聽

Babar hopes to do more of the same as he gets his bearings and becomes more acclimated to his new surrounding on聽Mason鈥檚聽Fairfax Campus.聽His volunteer experiences have prepared him well, giving him more patience and a broader world view.聽

鈥淚 believe that everybody should have that opportunity,鈥 he said.
